Laura Lisita is a human rights advocate who is passionate about instilling the value of education in women, youth and children in rural communities through motivational talks and mentorship programs. Laura recently completed her Master’s degree in Law at the North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Her postgraduate studies enabled her to travel to different countries including; Brazil, the Netherlands and Switzerland. It was during this period that Laura took a vested interest in promoting the value of education. In line with Shevestor’s mission, she believes education, including early childhood education is the starting point to promoting future financial stability. Laura’s goal is to establish a foundation for education through which she can accomplish her goal of empowering women, youth and children in rural communities.

1. What does your work as a human rights advocate involve?

My work as a human rights advocate largely involves academic work which is centered on promoting respect for the rights of children. Through my academic career, I have tackled issues such as the plight of child soldiers and child labourers.

2. Why are you concerned about using education to empower women, youth and children specifically in rural communities?

This concern comes from my personal educational journey. My education has over the years been met by a lot of financial struggles. What kept me afloat were the numerous bursary awards that I received including a scholarship to study in the Netherlands. This made me take a mature approach to how I perceive the value of education and in turn my aim was to empower the less fortunate such as those in rural communities.

3. Mentorship, how important is it to the academic journey of a young person?

Very important. Mentorship is key to unlocking a young person’s full potential. It instils a sense of purpose and confidence which I believe is a central force which can drive a young person’s dreams, ambition and passion.

4. What would you like a young person to learn about your academic journey and career experience so far? With respect to my academic journey, persevere even under the toughest circumstances. With respect to my career, be authentic and focus on your strengths, you will reap great rewards.

5. What do you hope to achieve through a foundation for education?

Through a foundation for education I hope to have a platform through which I can formally empower many women, youth and children in rural communities by giving them the opportunity to attain an education.
