1. Mathematics has for a long time been considered a male dominated area, what inspired you to pursue that path and how has your journey been?

I didn’t always have the interest in mathematics. In high school, we had the option of joining the advanced mathematics class, and I was forced into it by my dad. I am now very grateful for his faith in my abilities as I have grown to love the subject immensely. It wasn’t easy in the beginning but through continued practice I became better and more appreciative of the subject. It being a predominantly male dominated field, only fuelled my hunger to achieve greatly within it. I am determined to change the societal mind-set that girls don’t do math and I am living proof that actually, we do.

2. What is financial literacy and what is its significance in the development of Africa?

Financial literacy is the set of skills and knowledge a person possess that helps them make informed decisions based on their goals in effectively and efficiently managing their resources. These skills are long term and place us in positions to be our own saviors from poverty. Financial literacy stresses the importance of saving and investing in assets that have compounding interest. This simply means, we learn how to make our money grow. Having this skill would boost African economies and the livelihood of several Africans. Debt would be understood clearly and in some cases avoided and or fully paid off. More people would be able to afford higher education, purchase homes set up, business and so much more. Having more Africans with this skill would positively influence Africa’s development.

3. What does your work as a fitness trainer involve?

I help people achieve their fitness and health goals and build confidence in themselves through High Intensity Interval Training and nutrition. I am also a safe outlet for the people I train, and often talk to them about things going on in their personal lives that they might need advice on or just need someone to listen. I always stress the importance and effect eating healthy and exercising has on mental health, and our ability to be fully functioning members of society.

4. In your own words, what do staying fit and eating healthy mean to you?

Staying fit and eating healthy is a way of life. It’s not easy but once executed correctly the benefits our numerous. It means loving yourself unconditionally and part of that love is investing into things that make you the best version of yourself. For me, that is my health!

5. How can a student incorporate a healthy lifestyle?

Being a student myself I know how hard it is to stay fit and healthy when deadlines, exams and classes take up the majority of your time. I think the important thing to remember is that the opportunity you have to pursue higher education is one not to be taken lightly. But, we are the best versions of ourselves in and out of class when we spend a little time on our health weekly. Carving out specific times during the week to a form of exercise will not only help keep you healthy, but else help with stress. Another tip I have is, get rid of all unhealthy snacks in your dorm room and replace them with fruits! Be committed, set a schedule and persevere!
